2-year anniversary

Today, or rather yesterday, marks my 2 year anniversary of marriage to my dear wife Shidah, not counting the total 8 years I've known her. Marriage is never an easy road, but the ups far outweigh the downs; I consider myself blessed that I married my best friend, someone who not only tolerates my antics, but also joins in them as well.. 

Marriage itself is an experience which has really opened up my perspectives on life. It's not only always about passionate romance (although we have been conditioned to believe so), but also about trusting companionship and commitment. 

Some things I've learnt:

1. It pays to listen: being a tasked centred person, it sometimes pays just to listen instead of giving direct solutions and advice. This counselling "skill" has been practised more at home, that at the workplace. 

2. Don't sweat the small things: Some things that upset you, e.g. toothpaste not squeezed properly, items that you cannot find, things that are thrown away, upon reflection do not make much differences in your life. So why harp on it? 

3. Divide Roles clearly: especially when it comes to doing housework, it's important that your roles and responsibilities are clearly delineated and identified. There really is no point in hoping for couples deciding that household chores are shared responsibilities, then one person is unhappy that the other is not doing enough. 

4. Don't scrimp on the romance: Sometimes, it pays to take some effort to leave an "I Love you" note or purchase small gifts and crafts just to let the other person know that you love her, and vice versa. 

5. Love your in-laws: I didn't just marry her, I married her whole family! I feel blessed that I get along well with my wonderful in-laws. I was never one to maintain relationships outside the nuclear family; but now I find myself realising the importance of family ties and kinship.

6. Try to look attractive: which means I still need to continue trying to lose weight and keeping fit and healthy. hurhurhur. and you never know when stamina would be important.

7. Make important decisions as a couple: Hence I shall confess to my wife, if she reads this, that I bought a pet hamster on impulse. I may or not regret the purchase, though I have to live with it. I guess I attribute this to the fact that I'm not still not sure what warrants an important decision, hence...

8. Discuss on what constitutes an important decision. See, everything falls into place as part of a learning process! =) 

If that fails, maybe this might work.
