They F***ed You Up?

This is right from the gut

It's sometimes heart wrenching and oftentimes sad to observe children become the greatest casualties amidst the crossfire between their parents. As Social Workers, we want to deconstruct the situation within its context through understanding the intergenerational patterns of transmission of values, societal pressures, lack of fit in environmental systems, problematic interactional patterns etc.

But as much as we do so, it does strike a heavy chord to see children become collateral damage, especially when their powers to change their situations are limited. We speak of children having to be grateful to us for bringing them into this world. However, we bring them in knowing full well that they are dependent on us to develop their potential as human beings; that they will initially be powerless and susceptible to the winds of change, without our cares and concerns being the protective tarp that surrounds them.

Children are gifts for us to understand the true meaning of unconditional love, to allow us to play and empathise with the roles of protector and guardian, and perhaps eventually allow us to surrender into the role of the dependent. Roles which are abundant with the values that shape society and humanity. If we forsake the chance to benefit from these roles given to us, aren't we turning our backs on humanity and the higher power that gave us this opportunity?
