This would probably be a rare post for me on the upcoming elections.
As I mentioned in my previous post, there are already many informative sites from the viewpoints of the different parties, and thoughts and commentaries on the strengths and deficiencies of the different parties (and of course all the politicizing that has taken place). And personally I feel that others are probably doing a much better job then I probably would (with my inexperience in writing about political issues) with their clear and succinct arguments.
This is also a time for me to be less apathetic about Singaporean Politics.
What does social work have to do with politics? (you may or may not be asking me)
The common myth is that the practice social work should be kept away from the realm of politics.
But if we talk about espousing social justice, and elimininating social ills, affecting social policy, all these aspects are strongly intertwined with politics. How can our voices and, more importantly, the voices of the vulnerable be heard at higher levels? Only through our involvement in the political mechanisms of our country.
It is an exciting time with all the Group Representative Constituencies and the Single Member Constituencies being contested (sans one GRC) by the opposition. My interest and enthusiasm for the Election situation is also piqued by the presence of a few social work trained persons embroiled in the entire process.
I won't tell you who to vote, but I will tell you this:
Be involved in the whole process. Until elections day on May 7, attend as many rallies as you can, read the party manifestos, meet the incumbent Members of Parliament (ask them questions, not just shake their hands), and learn the perspectives held by all sides. Most important is to be sure you can make an informed choice.
For me personally, I am specifically exploring how these issues would be addressed:
1. Rising inequality amongst Singaporeans
2. Social Cohesion within my own community amidst the challenges of the increased number of foreigners and immigrants living in Pioneer constituency.
3. Future strategies in addressing issues of an ageing population (especially in the area of financial security for old age)
It is no longer about sitting around, and just waiting to see who impresses you. It is time to go out and be involved!
Aside: *Gulps down can of redbull* Now back to my assignment which is due on Friday! :'(
