How conversations with my mother play out:
Mother: Can you send me to XX's wedding this weekend?
Me: No! I don't even know XX, and you gave me such short notice anyway: I'm busy this weekend
Mother: What's wrong with spending time with your mother once in a while? Sometimes I just want to go out and meet people.
Me: But I don't even know these people!
Mother: You lah, only concerned about your own things, anyway I'm not important to you right? There is always something more important to do.
Me: This has nothing to do with you. one: I don't know this person, two: I already have other things planned
Mother: What's wrong with spending time with your mother once in a while? Sometimes I just want to go out and meet people. I just want to go out. Don't you love me?
Me: Didn't I just tell you this has nothing to do with loving or not loving you?
(cue 1 hour and 3 phonecalls later...)
Mother: What's wrong with spending time with your mother once in a while? Sometimes I just want to go out and meet people. I just want to go out. Don't you love me?
Me: FINE! I'll send you!!
Yesterday's conversation:
Mother: Can you send me to XX's Wedding?
Me: Sure
Mother: (caught off guard) I'm talking about sending me to this XX's wedding, you know?
Me: Yep I know
Mother: And I'm also asking you to pick me up at home also.
Me: Yeah, that too.
Mother: Are you sure you can send me?
Me: Yeps
Mother: But you don't know this person.
Me: Well, since it's important to you, why not?
Mother: But aren't you busy?
Me: Actually I am, but I think I can make some time.
Mother: It's ok then no need to send me, I can go myself.
Me: !?!??!?! I CAN SEND YOU LAH!
Much more people today need to read this and know this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more well-known considering that you undoubtedly have the gift.

The rules have gone so far they are now discriminatory to all others. In my case I work full time in a highly skilled area and have a good reputation for getting things done. I have an exemplary performance record and very low sickness (2 days in last 2 years). I have a good support network at home so have not taken any unplanned leave because of my children being ill. If the new team only has one position for someone with my skills I will not even be considered for the new post because a lady who works 2 days a week is on maternity leave. My employer has to give her the job and make me redundanct and as I work in the public sector that is the public paying my redundancy!
