Loofy! Picture courtesy of Farid
My dear wife and I recently purchased a pet Skinny Pig, which essentially is a hairless variety of a Guinea Pig. Contrary to its name, the rodent has no geneological links to the porcine version, although its physical appearance may prove otherwise. Our little Skinny Pig, named Loofy, who initially weirded us out with its very different appearance from the other cuddly and furry animals in the pet shop, eventually warmed us to its timid and adorable disposition and of course, cuteness in appearance and touch.
The responses from families and friends regarding the physical appearance of Loofy prompted my wife to exclaim, "It's not easy being different", a statement that would probably ring through for many of us, who have been chastised or viewed differently due to a unique aspect that makes up who we are.
It is indeed, not easy, being different. This is why most of us try to hide our respective "differences", with the hope of being able to be accepted by a group. Certain things can be easily hidden by the clothes we wear, or the makeup we put on our faces. They can be easily hidden through training oneself to behave in a way that would generally be acceptable.
Only when some measure of trust is obtained with a certain person or group of person, can we then allow some aspects of this "uniqueness" manifest progressively, and this is when we say that we can "truly be ourselves" when amongst such trusted company. Indeed, one would say that a true friend of life partner is one who is able to accept and understand our individual idiosyncracies without harsh judgement.
But for some of us, our unique aspects may not be so easily hidden to enable group acceptance. For some, such traits would be considered disruptions to the group's social norms. Such disruptions, according to Erving Goffman (1949), would the subject of practical jokes, and embarassments against the different individuals.
To what extent to we reflect on the immediate judgements and impressions that we give others, and what leeway to we give ourselves the opportunity to understand the other person better? This, is something I have struggled with. Fortunately or unfortunately, I have had experiences on each side of the coin. I have, at several points in my life, been the person struggling to keep up to social norms to be accepted amidst discrimination.
And yet, I have also regrettably been on the other side, a member of a socially desirable group which had ostracised and embarrased specific individuals due to their unique physical traits or behaviours. I frequently ponder on those aspects of my life that I am not proud of, and wonder about any long term affects of my behaviour, and whether I am at any position to change anything in the past. But I guess the past is the past, we take the stories that teach us to be better persons and move on.
Possibly, the lesson to be learnt, is to reflect on our own behaviours and actions, and how we can "walk in another's shoes", to understand our differences better. On the other side, how can we also reflect on whether such discriminations are actually oppressive, or could they be due to personality traits that we can actually change so that we do not disrupt the harmony and progress of the group? It is a thin line between Difference being good and ok; and Difference being a negative influence.
Eventually such discriminations do happen, but how can both sides be able to reflexively ponder on what is actually happening, and what essentially is making up this "difference". In the end, perhaps, we can all try to get along just that little bit better.
Thank you little Loofy for making me ponder. I accept your physical difference, because you are such a darling timid little rodent.
A good close friend might partner, however a mate will always be a fabulous buddy. nike requin nike requin

Hi there! I know this is somewhat off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this site? I'm getting sick and tired of Wordpress because I've had problems with hackers and I'm looking at options for another platform. I would be awesome if you could point me in the direction of a good platform. ミズノ http://www.mizunogoruhujp.biz/ ミズノ

Before you buy any sports fitness supplement, you should think of what other people's outcomes have been with said supplement you are considering purchasing. It's also wise to consider what type of body that they have when you are looking at their results. Someone who gains muscle easily will go through various results than somebody who doesn't gain muscle very easily. That's simply a fact.
A number of famous and even perhaps slightly infamous sportspeople were originally born in Hertfordshire, including Vinnie Jones (footballer and now actor), Nick Faldo (golfer), Zara Phillips (horse riding) and Lewis Hamilton (F1 racing driver), to name but a few of them. This success in sport in the county is perhaps not surprising given the county's current population of over one million but it has acted as a spur to younger people in Hertfordshire.
You may even prefer to give a little football this when you could be browsing the site. You can select any gifts, presents and souvenirs for any room in your home. Show your team spirit that has a lot of shirts, uniforms, balls, pennants, flags and some car accessories! Football has special gifts are given in amateur football. Manti Te'o and Notre Dame announced Wednesday that the linebacker was a victim of a hoax and that the girlfriend he thought had died in September actually never existed. The revelation came http://rg-online.co.uk/cheappackersjerseys.aspx only after Deadspin.com reported as much earlier in the day. The university said Te'o informed his coaches of the situation Dec. 26. During the gap between that date and Wednesday's announcement, the Fighting Irish played in the BCS title game and the Heisman Trophy runner-up's supposedly tragic story got plenty of coverage. Writers from around the Tribune Co. will discuss how well they think Notre Dame handled the situation. Check back throughout the day for more responses and join the conversation by leaving a response of your own. John Cherwa, Los Angeles Times Perhaps the saddest part of the Manti Teo Internet fraud story is the total lack of leadership shown by the once hallowed institution of Notre Dame. While a forensic examination of Teos statements would likely make it clear he was not telling nothing but the whole truth, the nike nfl jerseys fact that the school allowed -- and even encouraged -- Teo to not come clean on the hoax and focus on the BCS title game is beyond appalling. Dont be persuaded by the near-teary press conference of Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick. He deserves a nomination for best supporting accomplice. Do you think that press conference would have been held if Deadspin.com had not made public these sordid details of deception? We dont know the whole story and are conflicted on if we hope Teo is that nave or that calculating. But what is clear is once again Notre Dame failed yet another course in crisis management. [Updated at 11:06 a.m. Jan. 18: Matt Murschel, Orlando Sentinel Just about everyone involved in the Manti Teo story dropped the ball in some way, shape or form -- including Notre Dame. While school officials say they didnt learn of the hoax until Dec. 26, they still should have put themselves ahead of the story rather than getting blindsided by a report from Deadspin.com. While there is no handbook outlining how to handle a situation like this, its just common sense that Notre Dame should have pushed for transparency from Teo and his representation -- especially when you consider Notre Dames reputation also is on the line. Once the school hired a firm to investigate the situation, there should have been a point where all sides involved held a press conference to discuss the situation, preferably before the BCS title game Jan. 7. The sooner the better, if you ask me. Instead, they chose to wait and now Notre Dame and Teo are paying the price. Paul Doyle, Hartford Courant With so many unanswered questions, its difficult new nike nfl jerseys to draw definitive conclusions from the bizarre fake-girlfriend story. But this much is clear: Notre Dame hasnt distinguished itself. The school peddled jerseys for cheap Manti Teos story, benefiting from the heart-wrenching tale as the football program revived itself last fall. So when the hoax was revealed, Notre Dame immediately should have gone public to set the record straight. If were to believe the timeline of events, Teo was still telling the story after notifying the school of the hoax in late December. If that is in fact the truth, Notre Dame and Teo were knowingly propagating a lie. That makes Jack Swarbricks emotional press conference all the more bizarre. The athletic director left no wiggle room in his support for Teo, staking the schools reputation to a kid who has yet to publicly explain himself. That doesnt seem like sound and sane leadership. But is there anything sane about this whole thing?] ALSO: Photos: Sports scandals, past and present Hoax could affect Monti Te'o's draft status Manti Te'o hoax never should have gotten this far
Thanks to recent advances in women's sports health the women of today can take part in about any sport and do it safely. Most don't consider sports health until after they've been injured but the fact of the matter is that preventative maintenance is even more important to avoid problems later on. Listening to your body is important since we're all susceptible to injury in different parts of the body even though every sport has its own set of risks.
