Practicing what you Preach

As a social worker, a great deal of self reflection is required in order to assess myself (and maintain my sanity) and contemplate on the simple mantra of Practicing what you Preach. Many a times, we take the position of the expert, passing down certain information based on our theoretical assessments on what should probably be the right thing to do. These beliefs and values are based on our own experiences as well as based on theoretical evidence that probably has been researched upon. 

However, at times, we may need to question ourselves on the stances and positions that we take in relation to others. Then answer the simple question:

Are we doing/believing the very things we expect others to do?

This is a simple yet important question for us to personally evaluate the theoretical positions and value systems we have adopted. First it analyses whether our expectations of others are rational in relation to how others perceive us. Second, it sets the precedence for the question of "are others doing/believing the things they expect us to do?", which enables further reflexivity of how the positions we take interact with the positions of others. 

For me, the question of whether I practice what I preach may come in 2 possible scenarios as a social worker.

1) My own views regarding how clients' problems are maintained and how to intervene in these problems. 

When we follow certain theories and philosophies regarding how problems may arise in the family system, to what extent would I be pathologising certain phenomena observed in the family system. For example, to what extent is a parentified child considered to be a dysfunctional phenomenon? Especially when I have observed many individuals who were supposedly parentified, but yet are able to to well in their lives and generally project a happy outlook towards living. 

Another example would be the relationship building techniques I might recommend for families, or coaching techniques I might employ to improve the communications between family members. Are these techniques things that I employ in my own relationships with my family? I should at least ensure that I am trying it on my own before prescribing it to others. Truly that would be the fundamental basis of "evidence based practice", where you first see it successful in your own experiences. 

 

2) In supervisory relationships

When we work with our staff and supervisees, how are we exumplary of the demands or requests we make of them? Should we expect our supervisees to scale a mountain, where we have barely touched a molehill? One experience I gained as an instructor in National Service was an invaluable one: Never expect your man to do what you have not mastered or at least experienced several times. For me, leadership is a responsibility where respect has to be earned rather than allocated based on rank, and its probably more effective to lead by example, than by rank. 

 

For me, this question of whether I practice what I preach is one that I contemplate upon on this very early morning, where such thoughts can be slowly caressed and explored slowly. Then maybe I can possibly be a better social worker.
