New Frontiers

 

It has indeed been a while since my last post (exactly one month in fact). Have recently been tempted to continue this "non-blogging" phase for a while longer, but remembered the pact I made with myself to keep this endeavour alive (in lieu with comments I tend to receive about the short-lived nature of my "projects").

Its been a hectic month, and truly, change can be extensive during the course of a month. Within a month, I have basically changed job roles, moving from the family service centres into the Prison based setting (the family resource centre at Changi Prison Link) to work with families of inmates, and also inmates who have been released back into the community.

The team and I have more or less settled into our new roles. This  is something I consider to be something sort of a mini miracle, considering the fact that social workers had to close cases and hand over roles (usually takes at least 2 months for this). This probably happened due to:

1. A supportive agency which works as a team not for the benefit of the respective departments, but working together for the mission of helping the vulnerable. 
2. A dynamic and wonderful team that I get to work with that takes initiative and makes transition easier

 

But on this issue of change: Change is always unexpected, and somewhat painful. It slaps you in the face when you are sitting safe in the comforts of the role you barricaded yourself into, wrenches you out from the people you have regarded as family, and places you in a bare foreign land with limited resources. Change keeps you anxious, sweaty, and gives you many sleepless nights. Change tells you to reorganise the usual cognitive processes of thinking about problems, and formulate new alien ways of thinking about solutions. 

But change is also exciting. It keeps your adrenaline pumping. It tells you that there is progression, and progression not only for yourself, but also for the team you have left, and the team you have joined. As a social worker, it also means that you have more opportunities to help people, and above all, continue seeking to make a difference. 

So my friend, do not be afraid of change.
