Saya merujuk kepada artikel yang ditulis oleh Cik Nur Dhuha Esoof pada tanggal 25 Julai 2012, Rabu, berkenaan 'Penerima Biasiswa Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Awam.'
Pertama sekali, saya menabik usaha Cik Nur Dhuha yang telah membuat liputan berita yang sangat baik tentang kedua-dua belia yang meraih biasiswa suruhanjaya tersebut. Pencapaian mereka mengharumkan nama bangsa dan harus dijadikan contoh teladan kepada masyarakat Melayu/Islam di Singapura.
Saya cuma ingin memberi cerapan mengenai cara penulis menggambarkan cita-cita adik Maryam Hasanah Rozlan. Penulis mengatakan bahawa adik Maryam "tidak hanya ingin sekadar menjadi pegawai sosial, sebaliknya (Maryam) ingin menjadi seorang penggubal dasar agar dapat melakukan perubahan lebih besar untuk masyarakat."
Saya rasa gambaran tersebut kurang sesuai kerana penulis seakan-akan membuat kesimpulan bahawa seorang pegawai sosial tidak mampu melakukan perubahan besar di dalam komuniti kita. Sekilas pandang, mungkin ramai yang akan menafsirkan bahawa tugas penggubal dasar itu jauh lebih penting daripada tugas seorang pegawai sosial. Saya sedar itu bukan niat penulis sama sekali. Namun demikian, saya sekadar ingin menekankan peri pentingnya tugas seorang pegawai sosial yang tidak harus diperlekehkan atau dikecil-kecilkan.
Dalam era yang penuh cabaran, masyarakat kita berhadapan dengan pelbagai masalah sosial yang memerlukan perhatian dan bantuan pegawa-pegawai sosial. Merekalah yang akan menyingsing lengan dan turun padang untuk menolong golongan yang amat memerlukan. Merekalah yang akan menemani dan berikhtiar untuk membantu mereka yang bermasalah dalam saat-saat paling genting. Masyarakat kita perlu menyokong tugas dan peranan yang dimainkan oleh seorang pegawai sosial. Sebenarnya, para belia kita juga harus digalakkan untuk mempertimbangkan kerjaya mulia sebagai seorang pegawai sosial.
Mungkin perubahan-perubahan yang dilakukan oleh seorang pegawai sosial tidak kelihatan sebesar perubahan yang akan dilakukan oleh seorang penggubal dasar. Namun demikian, saya yakin seorang klien atau mereka yang telah dibantu oleh seorang pegawai sosial akan berpendapat sebaliknya. Sementelahan pula, setiap perubahan besar itu datang daripada usaha yang kecil, murni dan ikhlas.
Pada hemah saya, tugas seorang penggubal dasar dan seorang pegawai sosial amat berbeza tetapi kedua-duanya sama penting dan kedua-duanya mampu menyumbang dan berbakti kepada masyarakat menerusi cara yang berbeza-beza.
